The South Central franchise (run by Govia) was taken over from Connex on the 26th August 2001 and rebranded as Southern in May 2004.
It has remained under than brand ever since, although it has been part of the Govia Thameslink Rail (GTR) franchise since July 2015.
On the 22nd June 2008 Southern took over the former Gatwick Express franchise, although the name has been maintained.
