Wales & Borders was a franchise with a short but varied life as it expanded & died rapidly. It started on the 14th October 2001 and ended on the 6th December 2003 when it became part of the new Arriva Trains Wales franchise.

It was originally set up to take over Valley Lines which became Wales & Borders from October 2001, combining most of Wales & West's Welsh services plus the Cambrian line services from Central Trains. In September 2003 it took over North Wales coast line services from First North Western.
